Keeping social media accounts private and limiting personal information is essential for protecting your online identity and digital footprint. Public profiles can expose sensitive details—such as your location, workplace, or daily routines—which fraudsters and scammers can exploit for identity theft, phishing, or manipulation. By adjusting privacy settings, avoiding oversharing, and being mindful of who can see your posts, you reduce the risk of being targeted by cybercriminals. A strong, privacy-conscious approach helps safeguard your personal security, financial well-being, and emotional safety in an increasingly digital world.
Privatise
- On your profile, tap your profile picture on the top left of the screen.
- Tap ‘Settings and Privacy’ from the menu.
- Scroll down and tap the option for ‘Privacy and Safety’
- Choose ‘Privacy and Safety’.
- Now choose ‘Audience and Tagging’.
- Toggle the ‘protect your tweets’ button to ON.
Double check what can be seen from another account.
Is any personal information visible in the bio of the profile?
Temporarily Deactivate
- Log in from a mobile app or browser/computer.
- Click your profile picture in the top left corner.
- Select ‘Settings and Support’
- Click ‘Settings and Privacy’
- Click ‘Your Account’
- Click ‘Deactivate your account’.
- Enter your password and when prompted tap ‘deactivate’.
- Confirm by tapping ‘yes’.
Your X is now deactivated for 30 days before it is permanently deleted.
You can reactivate at any time in those 30 days by logging in and following the steps to reactivate.
Change you User Name
- Log in from a computer or mobile device.
- Tap your picture on the top left of the screen.
- Tap ‘Settings and Support’
- Tap ‘Settings and Privacy’
- Tap ‘Your Account’.
- Tap ‘Account information’.
- Tap ‘Username’
- Change User Name
- Click ‘Done’.
If you have changed your phone number and email, you can also update these here.
Your profile should now be untraceable to past scammers. Be aware of any new requests.
